If teachers are not provided textbooks, then how can they be expected to provide meaningful connections and merriment from the curriculum. It takes time to create resources and to keep them up to date with all of the technical options. Teachers now have the impossible task of competing with the the fast paced and instant feedback world of gaming for the attention of youth. If we do not gamify or reward students then we may lose their interests with the phone inches away vying for their attention.

I had textbooks when I first started teaching and then budgets were cut. We had to share one set of textbooks between multiple classes and students no longer had one to take home or to read at their own pace. This created a push for teachers to create their own resources and our photocopy budgets went way up. I content that it is cheaper to buy a class set of textbooks that might be able to be used a few years over the paper that ends up in landfills impacting our environment. (That is another discussion on its own.)

In the meantime, the time to create these resources and the prep time didn’t change. In fact, many Boards have been trying to negotiate contracts that have less prep time for teachers. How can you mark 30 assignments, give meaningful feedback, update resources and post them on whatever platform you are required to use in about 30 minutes. The private sector does not have the same unrealistic expectations for staff who are expected to complete training on their own time, prepare lessons (and photocopy), in addition to keeping parents informed. The number of emails that teachers need to respond to from parents (who are trying to do the work for their students) as well as the initiatives or changes in schedules around the school leaves teachers exhausted at the end of day and feeling that they never have enough time to concentrate on helping the students which is where they want to focus their time.

Yes, the system is broken. Yes, the buildings need repair. Yes, teachers need resources. However, the access of technology has also meant that using the same ‘shell’ for 10 years with the same assignment means that students have the assignment and work from their ‘friend’ and are just changing a few words and submitting the work on their own. If we don’t start funding the education system it isn’t DEI that we will need to worry about ….it will be the low level of literacy and numeracy. Teachers want to teach and students are willing to learn if we give them the resources.

There is nothing wrong with saving yourself a few minutes with your family by looking at resources available on Teachers pay teachers or items that have been made free and available on the internet. We would all love to spend more time learning how to make them on our own with the new tech…but teachers don’t even have to the time to do that!

PS. How would a school board know if you made it yourself? You don’t have to use their technology to create resources! You may have done it on your own home computer!

I just read a post indicating that Boards are now telling teachers not to use resources bought from

[13

post-1234","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-trends
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit.png",648,436,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit-150x150.png",150,150,true
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit-300x202.png",300,202,true
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit.png",640,431,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit.png",640,431,false],"1536x1536":["https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit.png",648,436,false],"2048x2048":["https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit.png",648,436,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit.png",648,436,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Merit-590x410.png",590,410,true
["GET
