The three settlements (Buxton, Wilberforce, and Norwich) and the abolitionists that assisted in the settlements are included as well as the routes that they took. The famous Harriet Tubman who moved her family from the South to freedom in the North is also highlighted. (She even lived in Canada for a bit and John Brown came to Canada to recruit free blacks for Harper’s Ferry.)

Great orators like Frederick Douglas also assisted in making people aware of the horrors of slavery in the US and also lectures in Canada and Britain. The connections that can be made or the opportunities for the teacher to expand understanding of this important humanitarian movement for rights. I have added a few for you as the teacher to have something to supplement in your lesson.

Students can label the three locations using maps to find the three marked places where there were large Black Settlements. The geographic location of the abolitionists are also marked to highlight that prominent individuals in the north not only were involved in anti-slavery societies but also abolitionist work. You could use this for a geography or history lesson.

There is a matching activity and students can also become more familiar with US State locations. Since Gerrit Smith’s handwriting was so messy (students love this detail) it was relatively unknown for years that he had funded many abolitionist and women’s rights activities.

The connections between these abolitionists are fascinating and additional materials are available to connect not only Black history across boarders and continents, but also the famous authors that helped to spread these important ideas. It shows that if we work together that we can help one another in our capacities.

The Quakers helped to fund the settlements in Ontario and advocated for Freedom from slavery in the United States. You will notice that many of the abolitionists have Quaker roots or lived by Quaker communities that were known for inclusivity. Unfortunately, the discrimination continued and now we can look back and learn from history.

This worksheet amplifies the Black settlements that were created in Ontario with the assistance of the Quakers who led the

[9
434,425,450,441,449,445,424,448,439,447,443,446,451,444,452,431,435
post-1257","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-resources","tag-abolitionists","tag-black-history","tag-colonization","tag-elgin-settlement","tag-frederick-douglas","tag-garrison","tag-gerrit-smith","tag-harriet-tubman","tag-john-brown","tag-levi-coffin","tag-lucan","tag-lucretia-mott","tag-new-york","tag-norwich","tag-pennsylvania","tag-quakers","tag-slavery
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements.png",602,605,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements-150x150.png",150,150,true
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements-300x300.png",300,300,true
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements.png",602,605,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements.png",602,605,false],"1536x1536":["https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements.png",602,605,false],"2048x2048":["https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements.png",602,605,false
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements-602x575.png",602,575,true
https://teacheraccommodated.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Abolitionist-Worksheet-for-the-three-black-settlements-590x410.png",590,410,true
["GET
