These ❤️4 +1 pages are ready to print and provide an easy lesson on Black History with connections to New York State and Canada. It includes key players and a visual aid for name and place recognition. It also has a quick vocabulary activity to help support your teaching. It is available in Word, so it is editable and can be adjusted based on your learning needs. It comes with a self-made map to help demonstrate the routes used on the Underground Railroad during the 1840’s before the shift back to changing the laws.

Information about how people were transported is also available for more in-depth historical exploration to support your teaching. My thesis was on the exaggerated role of the Underground Railroad in Canada since the northern states had ended slavery. In addition, many of the communities in Ontario failed due to racism on the other side of the border. How the abolitionists knew each other and supported the work is fascinating and becomes a lesson in who knew who for those interested in digging a little deeper during Black History Month and beyond. It can also be fun to have students find these connections for critical thinking or inquiry-based work!
